With the two-day event in Asunción, Paraguay, tomorrow, Thursday, and Friday, the Copa América concludes its second phase of competitions this May, following the two CL1 events in Santiago, Chile, and the two CL2 events in Lima.

This event was created to encourage participation from all COPACI National Federations in track cycling, and to allow their cyclists to accumulate UCI ranking points.

The competition, which will be held at the Olympic Field velodrome, is a CL2 event and consists of sprint, scratch race, and omnium for both men and women on the first day, and keirin, elimination, and points races on the second.

Argentina, Brazil, Peru, Uruguay, and, of course, Paraguay are the nations that have confirmed their participation. Among the top pre-registered riders are Brazilians Lucca Marques and Joan Vitor Silva, Uruguayans Luciana Wynants and Paola Silva, Peruvians Hugo and Robinson Ruiz and Francis Cachique, and locals Carlos Domínguez and Isaias Galeano Melgarejo.

It’s worth remembering that the first two races were held in April, in Port of Spain (Trinidad and Tobago) and Bogotá (Colombia), and that the competition will conclude in August with the qualifying races in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and San Juan (Argentina). However, there is no news yet on whether the Rio race will be able to take place after the fire that destroyed the roof of the velodrome at the Barra Olympic Park in early April.
