Franklin Archibold has become the new leader of the 2025 Tour of Panama, Vicente Carretero Cup, after winning the second stage on Wednesday, which ended with a “sterrato” finish.
Archibold, of the SENAFRONT team, was part of a breakaway that formed in the final 27 kilometers to the finish line. In the final three on unpaved roads (dirt roads), he managed to prevail over Costa Rican Sebastián Brenes, of the Ibero Celta Subregional Team, who finished 11 seconds behind, while Guatemalan José Canastuj, of Red Hook, finished third, 15 seconds behind.
This second stage covered 97.6 kilometers, between Chitré, Santa María, Pese, and Chumical, with 147 cyclists starting the day.
“I felt strong, and we were able to take advantage of the fact that few riders arrived at the sterrato. Now we’ll have to fight to stay at the top of the standings. There are still three days left, and we hope to win the title,” said Archibold, who was already champion of the Tour de Panama in 2021.
In the individual general classification, Archibold has a time of 4 hours, 4 minutes, and 9 seconds, followed by Sebastián Brenes at 19 seconds and José Canastuj at 25. Oscar Sevilla and Gabriel Rojas (ManzaTé La Selva Scott) are 28 seconds behind. Franklin Archibold also leads the Regularity category with 27 points.
Other category leaders are Dier Ríos (Rali Giant) in the youth category with a time of 4 hours, 6 minutes, and 2 seconds, and Michael Caballero (Rali Giant) in the under-23 category with 4 hours, 4 minutes, and 59 seconds.
Kristian Becerra (ILc Cycling Team) leads the Master A class with a time of 4 hours, 6 minutes, and 2 seconds, while his teammate Cristian Fajardo leads the Master B class with the same cumulative time.
This Thursday, the third stage runs 113 kilometers between Chitré, Divisa, the entrance to the Ingenio in Santiago, El Limón, Ocú, and Las Minas. Two sprints and a mountain prize will be held along the route, finishing at the summit.
