Jexon Ledezma, from Naranjos and a member of the U-23 National Team, took advantage of the time gap among the title contenders and dominated the first stage of the 2025 Tour of Costa Rica Telecable, finishing solo in 2:28:12 after 107 kilometers of competition between the Municipality of Heredia and Grecia Park.

As expected, the competition began with intense racing, featuring several breakaway attempts led by the Chilean Plus Performance ZEO Sport team with Francisco Kotsakis and Tomaz Quirós, the 7C Economy Hyundai team with Luis Daniel Oses, the ManzaTé La Selva Scott team with Jason Huertas and Sebastián Moya, the Movistar Best PC team with Bayron Guamá, and the Momentum Racing GCS Quici team represented by John Borstelman, who managed to lead the final stretch towards the first mountain prize at Altos de Naranjo, but was caught by the peloton just meters from the finish.

Ecuadorian Jymmi Montenegro (Movistar Best PC) dominated the points at the third-category climb, followed by Luis Aguilar and Leandro Varela of 7C Economy Hyundai. This move intensified the pace in the peloton and sparked a new breakaway attempt led by Fredd Matute (Momentum Racing GCS Quici), Dylan Jiménez (7C Economy Hyundai), and Daniel Bonilla (Colono Bikestation Kolbi).

Matute continued his solo effort, taking the day’s only intermediate sprint in San Ramón, followed by Marcos Sánchez (Distribuidora Cruz-Tecnoforest-Mistral-Atómica-Trama) and Jason Huertas (Manzaté La Selva Scott). Despite the skirmishes within the peloton, the Honduran remained at the front of the race, 15 seconds ahead of Jason Huertas and John Borstelman, and nearly 45 seconds ahead of the peloton, securing the maximum points at La Trocha (2nd category climb). Jymmi Montenegro (Movistar Best PC), Sebastián Moya (ManzaTé La Selva Scott), Luis Aguilar, and Dylan Jiménez (7C Economy Hyundai) led the breakaway group on the mountain pass.

Meanwhile, Luis López (ManzaTé La Selva Scott) took advantage of the descent, trying to create a gap, but a crash hampered his efforts and opened the door for an attack by Chilean Cristobal Baeza (Plus Performance ZEO Sport). This was followed by a move by Jexon Ledezma (Costa Rica National Team), Gabriel Pacheco (ManzaTé La Selva Scott), and Luis Monteros (Movistar Best PC), who managed to create a gap. This prompted Ledezma to launch his attack 13 kilometers from the finish, pedaling hard on the climb to Grecia in pursuit of the stage win.

Finally, the reigning Vuelta del Porvenir champion secured the victory in Grecia Park, beating Daniel Bonilla by 38 seconds. (Colono Bikestation Kolbi), finishing 40 seconds ahead of Leandro Varela (7C Economy Hyundai), 44 seconds ahead of Efrén Santos (Canel’s Java) and Luis Monteros (Movistar Best PC), and 47 seconds ahead of Gabriel Pacheco (ManzaTé La Selva Scott), becoming the first leader of the 2025 Vuelta a Costa Rica Telecable.

“Today was an extremely complicated stage. The climb was tackled at a fast pace with a group of elite riders. We had to attack from a distance to fight for the stage win, and thank God we got the stage win and the overall lead,” Ledezma declared.

The second stage of the 2025 Vuelta a Costa Rica Telecable will be contested between Alajuela, Vara Blanca, Aguas Zarcas, Sarapiquí, and Guápiles, covering a distance of 162 kilometers. The stage has been considered crucial due to the uphill start and the dangerous descent towards Aguas Zarcas.
