Joseph Ramírez, from Palmares and riding for Colono Bikestation Kolbi, surprised all the sprinters in the final sprint in Buenos Aires, securing his first victory in the 2025 Tour of Costa Rica with three stages still remaining.
The seventh stage of the Costa Rican tour took place between Pérez Zeledón and Buenos Aires and featured a breakaway of fifteen riders formed after the first intermediate sprint. Among them were Belizean Derrick Chavarría (Momentum Racing GCS Quici), Belgian Niels Matthys (Flanders Region Team), and Rodolfo Villalobos (Ciclo Café Repuestos Mena En su punto Rancho La Paz).
The day’s breakaway dominated the final 80 kilometers, building a lead of over two minutes. It was fueled by the desire of the ManzaTé La Selva Scott team to reclaim the lead in the intermediate sprints classification, with Jason Huertas (ManzaTé La Selva Scott) taking the lead in the absence of Fredd Matute (Momentum Racing GCS Quici) at the front of the race. The rider from Zarcero overtook Belgian Niels Matthys on both categorized climbs, but couldn’t stay with the eleven riders vying for the stage win.
Bryan Salas (Costa Frut Giant AC Marriot Belén) led the final kilometers, attempting to surprise the sprinters with a long-range attack, but his efforts were countered by Niels Matthys (Flanders Region Team) and Wessel Lange (Universe Cycling Team), who brought the peloton back together. Joseph Ramírez (Colono Bikestation Kolbi) took advantage of his attack 500 meters from the finish line, gaining the upper hand on the two corners before the finish line, securing his first victory in the Vuelta a Costa Rica with a powerful sprint finish. He was followed by his compatriot Sebastián Brenes (Canel’s Java) and the Dutchman Wessel Lange (Universe Cycling Team).
