In a vibrant finish, Wout van Aert (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) took the victory on Sunday in the ninth stage of the Giro d’Italia, which was disputed over 181 kilometers between Gubbio and Siena with several sections of sterrato, where the Mexican Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) took the lead of the ‘Corsa Rosa’.
The Belgian all-rounder spectacularly won the duel in the last meters to Del Toro, his breakaway companion, who came in second place, while Italian Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek) was reported third, 58 seconds behind the two leaders.
Del Toro became the first Mexican rider to reach the partial lead in Italy’s main cycling competition and from now on he will have the challenge of defending that jersey from Tuesday, when the Giro will resume after the second rest day on Monday.
As for the rest of the favorites, Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) came in fourth in stage nine; Simon Yates (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) fifth; Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain Victorious) sixth and Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) seventh. The big news was the loss of time of the Slovenian Primoz Roglic (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe), who arrived nineteenth at 2:22 minutes.
It is worth mentioning what was done by the zipaquireño Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) who attacked in one of the sectors of the sterrato with his countryman Brandon Rivera, however, in the last kilometers he could not hold the pace of the leaders, and had to resign himself, allowing himself to be caught by his pursuers. In the end, the beetle occupied a meritorious ninth place.
As for the overall individual classification, Italian Diego Ulissi (XDS Astana Team) ceded the lead to Mexican Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG), followed more than a minute behind his teammate, Spaniard Juan Ayuso and Italian Antonio Tiberi (Bahrain – Victorious), 1:13 and 1:30 behind the new maglia rosa.
The Italian round will have a rest day on Monday and will return on Tuesday with the tenth stage, a time trial day on flat terrain, 28.6 kilometers between Lucca and Pisa.
