This weekend, Armenia buzzed with excitement for the South American BMX Freestyle Championship, a landmark event that marked the first official continental competition organized by the Colombian Cycling Federation in this discipline. As expected, the Villegas twins, leading figures in Colombian freestyle, took the top two spots on the podium.
Queen Saray Villegas, from Valle del Cauca, who earned an Olympic diploma at the 2024 Paris Olympics, won the gold medal. The silver medal went to her sister, Lizsurley Villegas, while Venezuelan Katherine Díaz finished third.
The event, held at the Olympic Village track, was supported by the Ministry of Sport, the Mayor’s Office of Armenia, the Municipal Institute of Sport and Recreation of Armenia (IMDERA), and the Pan American Cycling Confederation, giving a decisive boost to the growth of BMX Freestyle in Colombia and South America.
The Villegas sisters will travel in the coming days with their coach, Alejandro Caro, to Peru to represent Colombia at the Lima-Ayacucho 2025 Bolivarian Games.
Williams Pérez takes gold in Flatland
Peruvian Williams Pérez shone once again at the South American BMX Freestyle Championship, held in the city of Armenia at the Olympic Village track, located next to the Centenario Stadium.
The Peruvian rider confirmed his performance in the qualifying round and took the gold medal in the Flatland discipline after a flawless final that confirmed his dominance, scoring 73.66 points. The silver and bronze medals went to Colombia. Esteban Palencia finished second with 63.33 points, and Nelson Roldán finished third with 49 points.
The event, which is supported by the Ministry of Sport, the Mayor’s Office of Armenia, the Municipal Institute of Sport and Recreation of Armenia (Imdera), and the Pan American Cycling Confederation, will conclude with the park finals, where the Colombians are considered favorites.
