The Carchi locomotive at full steam! Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) won the complicated eleventh stage of the Giro d’Italia 2025. The Ecuadorian rider, who surprised with a fierce attack in the final part, was the first to cross the finish line in Castelnovo ne’ Monti after 186 kilometers and thus added his fourth stage win in Italian participations.
The South American brought out his climbing skills in the final part of the stage to take 10 seconds off his pursuers. The leader, Mexican Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) came in second and successfully defended the ‘maglia rosa’. Third reported Italian Giulio Ciccone (Lidl-Trek).
“I chose the right moment and I’ve gone alone, it has been special and exciting. In the end I had a good chance, I knew it was a hard day and I decided to try legs,” said Carapaz at the end of stage 11.
With his victory the ‘Locomotora del Carchi’ discounted time to all his rivals and managed to move up three positions in the overall that allow him to approach the top 5 of the Italian round, which he already knew how to win in 2019.
“I had everything under control, there was a lot of interest during the day, in the end I knew how to move at the right time. This victory is very special and after a long time to win again in a grand tour is satisfying. My wife and my son had their birthdays and that motivated me”.
Likewise, the South American rider, who trained in Colombian cycling, was satisfied with his solid performance and hopes to improve in what is left, knowing that there are mountain stages ahead that suit him well.
“We have a very hard week and we will continue to fight to improve in the general classification. There are great rivals, but I’m going to fight for this Giro,” concluded Carapaz, the Olympic champion in Tokyo 2020.
In the same group of favorites entered the Colombians Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) fifth and Einer Rubio (Movistar Team) eighth, accompanied by the ‘Gallos de la General’, all ten seconds behind Carapaz.
One of the great protagonists of the day was Nairo Quintana (Movistar Team), who was leading the breakaway of the day in the company of Italian Lorenzo Fortunato (XDS Astana Team), Spanish Pello Bilbao (Bahrain – Victorious), Dutchman Poels Wout (XDS Astana Team) and Australian Luke Plapp (Team Jayco AlUla), but with 10 kilometers to go they were all neutralized.
This Thursday will be the 12th stage of the 108th edition of the ‘Corsa Rosa’, which will take the riders from Modena to Viadana over 172 kilometers with two third-category mountain passes and a flat finish.
