The young Colombian cyclist Salomé Vargas sparked celebrations throughout the country after being crowned Junior Pan American Road Cycling Champion. She triumphed brilliantly in a group sprint after covering 67 kilometers on the streets of Cereté, in the department of Córdoba.

The daughter of national team coach David Vargas secured the gold medal in the road race at the Montería 2026 Pan American Road Cycling Championships, earning Colombia its third gold medal in Córdoba.

“This is a victory I dedicate to all my teammates and my family. I prepared very hard for this event because I knew it was a tough race and that the best in the Americas would be there, but also because I dreamed of winning it, and that dream came true,” said the winner amidst laughter and congratulations.

Venezuelan Jennifer Lagos took second place, and Chilean Alexandra Osorio completed the podium, moving up to third after the disqualification of Colombian Estefanía Castillo.

Following a review by the race officials, who invoked article 5.2—for slowing down during the sprint, knowingly remaining within the line of other cyclists, celebrating in the group, and taking her hands off the handlebars—she was stripped of her bronze medal.

The junior race featured 34 cyclists representing 11 countries. Ten of them competed in last year’s Pan American Championships, held in Punta del Este, Uruguay, where Colombia also won with Luciana Osorio.
