This Saturday, October 25th, the second stage of the Tour of Guatemala 2025 took place. The day began in Gualán, Zacapa, and ended in El Corcovado, Jalapa, with a 160.6-kilometer route that included five mountain bike races. Sebastián Calderón of the 7C-Economy-Hyundai team took the solo victory.

With a time of 4:06:43, the Costa Rican left defending champion Robinson Fabián López (GW-Erco-Shimano) by 12 seconds and Colombian Rodrigo Contreras (Nu Colombia) by 13 seconds. Guatemalan Juan Mardoqueo Vásquez (Hino-One-La Red) finished fourth as the best national representative.

The stage, marked by a long breakaway and a grueling first-category final climb, also led to a change of leader in the general classification, which passed to Colombian Cristian Camilo Muñoz (Nu Colombia).

The stage saw outstanding performances from the national representatives. Juan Mardoqueo Vásquez of the Hino-One-La Red team finished in fourth place, just 13 seconds behind the winner, demonstrating his quality as a climber and positioning himself among the favorites for the general classification.

Edgar Geovanny Torres, also of Hino-One-La Red, won the first-category mountain prize on the final climb of Jalapa and finished ninth in the stage. His performance placed him in third place in the general classification, just 9 seconds behind the leader, Muñoz, becoming the best Guatemalan in the Tour.

Esdras Morales, a participant from ECA Electricidad, led the day’s breakaway, breaking into the group of 11, the only Guatemalan to be part of this breakaway that shaped the stage. Morales also finished third in two of the day’s intermediate sprints.

Dominant in mountain prizes and intermediate sprints

Ecuadorian Jymmi Montenegro of the Movistar Best-PC team dominated the mountain prizes, taking three of the day’s five climbs. Montenegro took first place in Guastatoya (category 2, km 88.5), Rótulo Aéreo (category 2, km 100.6), and San Felipe La Perla (category 4, km 121.5).

Ignacio Prado had a standout day, winning the first category mountain race at kilometer 52 and the second intermediate sprint at kilometer 78. Sebastián Brenes of the Canel’s Java team from Mexico took all five points from the first intermediate sprint at kilometer 42, while Juan Pablo Rendón won the third and final intermediate sprint at kilometer 128.

New overall classification

After this decisive stage, Colombian Cristian Camilo Muñoz takes the lead in the overall classification with a time of 7:53:54, the same time as Carlos Alberto Gutiérrez (Movistar-Best PC), who is in second place. Guatemalan Edgar Geovanny Torres is in third place, just 9 seconds behind the leader, becoming the national hope.

Mardoqueo Vásquez doesn’t appear in the top 10 overall, but his fourth place in the stage cements him as one of the climbers to watch in the upcoming mountain stages.
