Guatemalan Sergio Chumil, of Burgos Burpellet BH, won the gold medal in the road race at the Guatemala 2025 Central American Games, one day after taking bronze in the individual time trial at the same event.
Chumil truly impressed his home crowd at the race held in Quetzaltenango. With an attack on the penultimate of the 14 laps of the Los Altos highway circuit, he stormed to the front of the field, seeking his third win of the season. A gold medal that came with a bronze medal won the day before in the individual time trial.
After his outstanding performance a week ago at the Italian Tessile & Moda Trophy, Sergio Chumil traveled to his home country to join the Guatemalan national team at the important Central American event. The Games are held every four years, pitting the best runners in Central America against each other.
On Saturday, the Burgos Burpellet BH cyclist climbed onto the podium after finishing third in the time trial. The Guatemalan cyclist completed the 30-kilometer course in 42 minutes and 18 seconds.
The following day, he improved on this result by taking victory in the road race. The Guatemalan team constantly held off the attacks of the favorites from other teams, and a small group of riders led the way into the penultimate lap of the circuit.
Among them was Sergio Chumil, who took off on an uphill section and quickly opened up a lead of more than half a minute. The Guatemalan had no problems on the final lap and was able to celebrate in front of his home crowd another victory, similar to those he achieved this year in O Gran Camiño (Galicia) and in the national championship.
Sergio Chumil expressed, “I’m very happy and grateful. The national team gave me the opportunity to race again and did an excellent job controlling the race. We played our cards well and were able to finish in the best possible way at the end.
“The lead came to be about five minutes long, but we kept our cool to handle it in the best possible way. I dedicate the victory to my family, who have been here at the race with me, and to all the Guatemalan fans, who have always been following my performances. They wanted me to win a race here, and this time we were given the opportunity.”
