2018 Vuelta a España winner Simon Yates (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) was crowned champion of the 108th edition of the Giro d’Italia after taking over the ‘maglia rosa’ on the penultimate day and breezed through the final stage in Rome.
The British rider overcame no problems on the last day to finish on the top of the podium of the Corsa Rosa. The places of honor were completed by two cyclists from America: the Mexican Isaac Del Toro (UAE Team Emirates – XRG) second on the podium and the Ecuadorian Richard Carapaz (EF Education – EasyPost), third.
As for other Latin Americans it is worth mentioning that for the second consecutive year Colombia had two representatives in the top 10 of the ‘Corsa Rosa’, this time with the zipaquireño Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) seventh and the boyacense Einer Rubio (Movistar Team) eighth.
The last stage of the Italian round, which took place around Rome with a 125-kilometer route, passed through the Vatican City State, where Pope Leo XIV blessed the entire peloton and where Nairo Quintana broke the protocol and stopped to greet him.
The win in the final stage went to Dutchman Olav Kooij (Team Visma | Lease a Bike), who beat Australian Kaden Groves (Alpecin – Deceuninck), while Venezuelan Orluis Aular (Movistar Team) had to settle for eighth place.
Yates, 32, who succeeded Tadej Pogacar, the ninth in the Corsa Rosa list of winners, took his second Grand Tour victory after winning the Iberian round once before.
It was a final victory for a fantastic rider. Simon Yates never gave up despite his legs putting him a point behind Carapaz and del Toro in the head-to-head. However, the Briton knew how to move smartly, proving that in cycling the strongest does not always win, to turn the race around and achieve that victory that the Giro d’Italia owed him since 2018.
