On a short and explosive mountain stage, Thymen Arensman (INEOS Grenadiers) took a hard-fought victory this Friday on the shortened stage 19 of the 2025 Tour de France, contested between Albertville and La Plagne over a distance of 93 kilometers.
The final climb proved decisive in determining the winner of this short stage. The most decisive attacker was Thymen Arensman (INEOS Grenadiers), who bravely faced the final stretch to reach the finish line with just two seconds between them and his pursuers.
Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) finished second, and Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates – XRG), who continues to enjoy excellent physical condition and widens the gap on his rivals, finished third. The yellow jersey wearer reaffirmed his lead and is heading towards the top step of the podium on the Champs-Élysées.
From the opening kilometers, attacks were a constant, with Colombian Einer Rubio (Movistar Team), Slovenian Primož Roglič (Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe), and Frenchmen Valentin Paret-Peintre (Soudal Quick-Step) and Lenny Martinez (Bahrain – Victorious) trying to break away from the pack. As the kilometers passed, largely under the control of the Arab team UAE Team Emirates – XRG, the pack disintegrated on the initial climbs, leaving around twenty riders before the end of the first part of the day.
Then, Roglic’s turn came, and he was alone for several kilometers until the leading group neutralized him and overtook him. From then on, the Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team took control at the front. The final climb ultimately determined the group of favorites, until Pogacar made a change of pace, bringing Dane Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) and Dutchman Thymen Arensman (INEOS Grenadiers) onto his wheel.
In the final section, Arensman fought a fierce battle with a group of six pursuers, led by the yellow jersey winner, Tadej Pogacar, which ended with a happy ending for the Dutch rider, who claimed his second victory in the Grande Bouclé.
The French tour will continue this Saturday with stage 20, the penultimate leg of the 184.2-kilometer route between Nantua and Pontarlier, which includes four categorized climbs and a flat finish.
