A great start to the season for Australian Jay Vine, who was crowned champion of the 2016 Tour Down Under, succeeding his teammate, Ecuadorian Jhonatan Narváez, winner last year. The Australian rider, who suffered a fall without serious consequences, successfully defended his orange jersey in the final stage held in Stirling, a suburb of Perth.
The podium of the first World Tour race of the year was completed by Swiss rider Mauro Schmid (Team Jayco AlUla) and Australian Harry Sweeny (EF Education-EasyPost), who finished second and third, respectively.
As for the Colombians, Bogota native Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain-Victorious) finished in 22nd place, 2:20 behind Vine, while Boyacá native Juan Sebastián Molano (UAE Team Emirates XRG) did not finish the race.
The final stage was won by Briton Matthew Brennan (Team Visma | Lease a Bike), who was the fastest in the final sprint, achieving his first victory of the season, after covering the 168.9 kilometers around Stirling.
