The Colombian cyclist Juliana Londoño won this Saturday the women’s road race in the Pan American Road Championship, held in Punta del Este, Uruguay, after riding first the 104.8 kilometers in Charrúa territory.
Colombia returns to the elite podium of the women’s road race, after 11 years. The last medal had been achieved in 2014, with Laura Lozano who was bronze. Londoño was Pan American runner-up in the junior category in Panama, in 2023.
The champion, only 20 years old, was the fastest in the sprint. The places of honor were completed by the American Skylar Schneider, who took the silver medal and the bronze went to Teniel Campbell from Trinidad and Tobago.
This title was the third for Colombia in the history of the Elite Pan American Road Race, as it was previously won by Adriana Muriel in the 1990 edition and Luz Delgadillo in 2021.
On the other hand, the road race for men under 23 years old had a final of pure speed, in which Jonathan Guatibonza and Cristian Vélez made the 1-2, in a tight final sprint. The podium was completed by Uruguayan Ciro Perez, after a hard-fought race full of alternatives, with numerous attacks and breakaway attempts that finally did not come to fruition.
The race was contested over a distance of 157.2 kilometers on a 12-lap circuit of 13.1 kilometers. In the closing, the Argentine Mateo Kalejman tried to surprise the peloton, but failed in his attempt.
The race took place in the midst of a great dominance, marking and rivalry between Colombia and Argentina, countries that exhibited the best level both individually and collectively, where the nationals took the places of honor.
The continental event ends this Sunday with the elite men’s race over 198.4 kilometers on the same route on which the U-23 riders competed and Colombia is once again the favorite, presenting its candidates: Wilmar Paredes, Álvaro Hodeg, Nicolás Gómez, Alejandro Osorio and Walter Vargas.
