In a steep climb, Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) won the ninth stage of the 2025 Vuelta a España. On the demanding climb to the Valdezcaray Ski Resort, the Danish rider was the most courageous and took the victory after a lightning attack.

The Scandinavian cyclist was the strongest, after covering 195.5 kilometers. Second came in Briton Thomas Pidcock (Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team) and third came Portuguese João Almeida (UAE Team Emirates – XRG), both 24 seconds behind. Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) was the fastest rider of the day, finishing 15th, 1:46 behind the winner.

In the general classification, Norwegian Torstein Træen (Bahrain Victorious) put up a gallant fight and remained the overall leader, but all his rivals were closing in on him.

In the early stages, the breakaway wasn’t easy to form, but after several attempts, the final break consisted of German Michel Hessmann (Movistar Team), Polish Michał Kwiatkowski (INEOS Grenadiers), Irishman Archie Ryan (EF Education – EasyPost), American Kevin Vermaerke (Team Picnic PostNL), and Belgian Liam Slock (Lotto).

With 13 kilometers remaining, all the breakaway riders were caught by the group of favorites. Then it was the turn of the title contenders, with Jonas Vingegaard demonstrating his credentials as the frontrunner.

The Iberian Tour will have its first rest day this Monday, before the peloton tackles the tenth stage on Tuesday, covering a 175.3-kilometer route between Sendaviva Nature Park and Larra Belagua Fairgrounds.
