Mexican cyclist Yareli Acevedo once again brought glory to Mexico by winning the gold medal in the elimination race at the 2016 Track Cycling World Cup in Perth, a result that confirms her excellent form on the international circuit.

The Mexican rider prevailed in a hard-fought final against Norway’s Anita Yvonne Stenberg, who took the silver medal, while Sze Wing Lee of Hong Kong completed the podium with the bronze.

The elimination race, also known as the “devil’s race,” requires competitors to maintain a leading position at all times, as the last cyclist to cross the finish line is eliminated at regular intervals.

In this high-pressure environment, Acevedo managed her effort during the initial laps and stayed within the leading group. The race was decided in the final laps, when the Mexican rider staged a fierce sprint against Stenberg to claim first place in the Australian velodrome.

The victory holds special significance, as the Track Cycling World Cup brings together some of the world’s best cyclists and is a key part of the calendar leading up to the major events of the Olympic cycle.

For Yareli Acevedo, this result reaffirms her position as one of Mexico’s leading cyclists on the international stage, following a series of important achievements in recent years, including the world title in the points race in 2025. Furthermore, the victory represents a significant boost for Mexico in its competitive journey towards the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games, where the cyclist aims to establish herself as a medal contender.
