In a thrilling finish, Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) took the win on the second stage of the 2016 Tour de France, a 168.5-kilometer route between Tarragona and Barcelona, in Spain.

The Mexican rider was the fastest, winning comfortably ahead of his team leader, Slovenian Tadej Pogacar, and Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe), who finished second and third, respectively.

There were no major changes in the general classification. Dane Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) continues to lead the race, followed by Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates – XRG) and Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe).

The day’s breakaway was led by German Félix Engelhardt (Team Jayco AlUla) and Dutchmen Frank van den Broek (Team Picnic PostNL) and Alex Molenaar (Caja Rural – Seguros RGA). The trio worked harmoniously to build a significant lead, but they were unable to do so and the peloton kept them under control.

Before tackling the final mountain stage, the three leaders were caught. Then, on the Côte du Château de Montjuïc (1.6 km at 8.7%), several riders attempted a breakaway, but all failed.

As for the Colombians, they all finished behind the group of favorites. The highest-placed Colombian rider was Sergio Higuita (XDS Astana Team) from Antioquia, in 19th position, followed by Egan Bernal (Netcompany Ineos) from Zipaquirá in 23rd and Harold Tejada (XDS Astana Team) from Huila in 25th.
