In the classic race honoring five-time Tour de France champion Miguel Induráin, Spaniard Ion Izagirre (Cofidis) won his third title in the Spanish classic, on a 203.9-kilometer course that passed through the municipality of Estella.
The podium of the Spanish classic was completed by American Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek) and Frenchman Alex Baudin (EF Education-EasyPost), who finished 2nd and 3rd, respectively.
As for the Colombians, the best was Sergio Higuita (XDS Astana Team) in 50th place, followed by Harold Tejada (XDS Astana Team) in 51st, Juan Guillermo Martínez (Team Picnic PostNL) in 65th, while Jesús David Peña (Efapel Cycling) did not finish the race.
The breakaway was led by Portugal’s Rafael Durães (Efapel), France’s Louis Ferreira (Anicolor/Campicarn), and Spain’s Carlos García Pierna (Burgos Burpellet BH), Sinuhé Fernández (Burgos Burpellet BH), and Unai Aznar (Euskaltel-Euskadi), but the peloton caught them all near the end.
The race began to take shape on the Alto de Eraul (3.9 km at 5.3%), a demanding second-category climb that whittled down the peloton, where the favorites emerged, with Spain’s Ion Izagirre (Cofidis) and the United States’ Quinn Simmons (Lidl-Trek) as the main contenders.
