Other leaders
Vanegas spent three years trying to win the Tour of Nicaragua and it was not until this year that he was able to put together a team that could combine and dominate the different terrains of the stages and thus win the event.
The Kilos team was also left with the leader in Mountain Awards, Luis Carlos Guido, who scored 13 points and was also the Best Team. The leader of intermediate goals was won by Donovan Ramírez of Team Real Estelí with 15 points, while the youth leader’s jersey was disputed by Geovanny Fonseca of Team ALFA, one of the promises in cycling. Fonseca is the 2024 Individual Time Trial Champion and 2023 Road Champion.
This is how it happened
Since the starting flag was lowered, the cyclist Henrry Rojas of Team EDA.SA went at once, he tested his endurance to be in the breakaway four laps. The peloton reacted and caught up with him, this caused that several cyclists could not be in the main peloton and were taken out by the commissaries of competition, according to race rules.
The race was very fast. It was until lap 8 and 9 that everyone was able to recover and rode to be strong on lap 10, where the flying finish line was, the attacks were still the order of the day, and lap after lap they were taking more riders out of the circuit.
The pace of the circuit was maintained at 50 kilometers per hour and 60 in the downhill part. Each lap took 4 minutes and 12 seconds. The Real Estelí team chased at all times and the rider Donovan Ramírez took the first flying goal.
Real Estelí wins prizes in the finals
Of the 77 riders the famous sieve was made and Donovan Ramirez repeated in the flying goal and two cyclists of Team Real Esteli escaped, Bryan Jimenez and Donovan took a little more than 20 seconds to the peloton when they reached the last lap (20) and took over the first two places. Jimenez came in first place and Donovan Ramirez in second.
The peloton arrived 40 seconds later and in third place came Ricardo Roullion of Team Real Estelí, thus this team takes the first three places of the Fifth Stage of the Tour of Nicaragua 2024.
