The city of Montreal, Canada, will host the 2026 UCI Road World Championships from September 20-27, making the nation the epicenter of world cycling, as the UCI’s annual Congress will also take place in the days leading up to the event.
This will be the second time the event has been held in the Canadian city and the third time it has been held in Canada, having previously hosted it in 1974 (incidentally, the first time a Road World Championship was held outside of Europe) and in Hamilton in 2003.
The event also coincides with the celebrations taking place in Canada for the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Montreal Olympic Games, the only time that North American nation has hosted the Games.
So far, the program will feature eight days of competition and is expected to include more than 1,000 cyclists from over 80 countries, who will compete for podium finishes in 13 events. It is anticipated that more than 200 million people will be able to watch these competitions on television or via online streams.
Since 2010, Montreal has hosted the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal, part of the UCI WorldTour, which brings together the most prestigious men’s road cycling events in the world. The routes of the various races in the UCI World Championships will be based, in part, on that of this important event on the UCI International Calendar.
Beyond competitive cycling, Montreal is also recognized for developing and promoting cycling for all, as evidenced by the UCI Bike City designation awarded to it by the UCI.
