Egan Bernal has not competed for a month. On January 28, he withdrew in the middle of the Vuelta a San Juan due to a knee injury and for this reason he was absent from several competitions that he had scheduled: The National Cycling Championship, the Vuelta a Andulucía and now the Paris-Nice race which runs from March 5 to 12.
Without having traveled to the INEOS Grenadiers camp in Europe, Egan advances his rehabilitation in Colombia along with physios, doctors and a physical trainer, all working with the goal of having him 10 points before his trip. The cyclist himself published some images of his work at home.
“Here we continue to do things with love, passion and above all a lot of motivation (…) To reach the moon you have to aim at the sun,” Bernal wrote in the Instagram post.
“Already training again, super happy and the knee improved, from one day to the next. He improved from heaven to earth and we are already training super judicious. I really needed the truth,” Bernal commented in his own chat on the social network.
From the Italian press it is said that the champion of the Tour de France 2019 and Giro d’Italia 2021 would run again at the end of March in the Coppi e Bartali, a race in which he was third in 2017 and that has never had a Colombian winner. His team does not want to risk him this season and will take him little by little, surely he will not be the leader in the first two majors of the year.
“I feel strong and motivated for a key season in which I will really understand how my body will react. It won’t be decisive, but it will indicate whether I can win again or not. Reflecting on it, it would be more normal for me not to win in 2023, but that’s the ambition,” Egan said.
And he concluded in this regard: “the team has given me full support, to continue training, that the knee continues to respond and to continue working and training a lot. I am going to be here in Colombia for 10 days and travel to Europe and see what races there are depending on the form that I have lost. I can go there and measure myself to gain confidence”.
