Confirming his status as favorite, Filippo Ganna (Netcompany INEOS) demonstrated his superiority and decisively won the tenth stage of the 2016 Giro d’Italia, a 42-kilometer individual time trial between Viareggio and Massa. The other big news was that Portugal’s Afonso Eulálio (Bahrain – Victorious) retained the overall lead.

The Italian proved unstoppable in the battle against the clock, winning with a time of 45:53, averaging 54.92 km/h, ahead of Dutchman Thymen Arensman (Netcompany INEOS) and Frenchman Rémi Cavagna (Groupama – FDJ United), who completed the ITT podium. The best Colombian in the time trial was Egan Bernal (Netcompany Ineos) from Zipaquirá, finishing 23rd, more than 3 minutes behind his teammate.

The first rider to start was Dutchman Frank van den Broek (Team Picnic PostNL), but under cloudy skies. Before the arrival of the favorites, German Max Walscheid (Lidl – Trek) was in the hot seat. In the end, the battle for the time trial victory focused on Ganna, who pushed himself to the limit to secure another win in his specialty.

With the results of the time trial, the general classification saw significant changes at the top. Portuguese rider Afonso Eulálio (Bahrain – Victorious) retained the Maglia Rosa and is followed by Dane Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma | Lease a Bike), but now 27 seconds behind.

The Italian tour will continue this Wednesday with the eleventh stage, a leg-breaking 195-kilometer day between the towns of Porcari and Chiavari, which includes three categorized mountain passes and several short climbs.
