Héctor Álvarez successfully held onto the yellow jersey during the final stage of the Vuelta al Ecuador, securing the overall title. The 20-year-old cyclist took the lead on the fifth day and also dominated the young rider (U23) classification from start to finish.
While César Guavita won the stage itself, it was Héctor Álvarez who triumphed overall on Sunday, September 13. The Ecuadorian cyclist managed the lead he had built in the general classification and crossed the finish line at the “Mitad del Mundo” (Middle of the World) monument in fifth place—a result sufficient to clinch the title.
The decisive stage started in Cotacachi and covered 126.25 kilometers, featuring a demanding route between the provinces of Imbabura and Pichincha. Álvarez managed to stay with the lead group during the climbs at El Cajas and Virgen de Tocachi—the first two categorized climbs—as the race progressed toward Malchinguí, Jerusalén, and Perucho.
The final major obstacle was the ascent to Tanlahua, a 13.45-kilometer Category 1 climb that began after crossing the Guayllabamba River.
Álvarez held firm during the decisive stretch; after cresting the final climb and tackling the last few kilometers toward San Antonio de Pichincha, he secured the championship with his fifth-place finish in the stage.
Héctor Álvarez’s Journey in the 2026 Vuelta al Ecuador
Héctor Álvarez was a key figure in the 2026 Vuelta al Ecuador from day one. The Best PC rider finished second in the opening stage between Machachi and Baños, taking the lead in the U23 category.
After the second stage, he trailed Byron Guamá by just eight seconds; although the gap widened later, he consistently remained among the top contenders in the general classification.
After withstanding the mountain stages toward Cotopaxi and El Cajas, Álvarez arrived at the fifth stage still sitting in second place behind Guamá. That was when he made his move: he won the stage between Bolívar and Tulcán solo, taking the lead in the general classification.
The following day, he confirmed his status as a favorite during the queen stage to Cuicocha, finishing third while his teammate Kevin Navas took the win.
Álvarez thus entered the final stage wearing the yellow jersey, tasked with defending his lead over the 126.25-kilometer route between Cotacachi and Mitad del Mundo. Although Guavita beat him by 26 seconds, his fifth-place finish was enough to secure the Vuelta al Ecuador title.
