The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) updated its world rankings this week, following the conclusion of the Pan American Road Cycling Championships, with Mexican Isaac del Toro climbing to second place after winning the UAE Tour.

The rankings, which take into account results from all UCI races over the past 52 weeks, continue to be comfortably dominated by Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates), who remains at the top with 11,635 points.

The world champion, who has almost double the points of his closest rival, teammate Isaac del Toro, remains the highest-ranked Latin American on the list with 6,789 points, while Dane Jonas Vingegaard (6,369) retained third place.

Isaac del Toro’s performance has been key in placing Mexico within the top 10 in the national rankings. In addition to his points, other results from members of the national team were also added, including those from Eder Frayre and the Prieto de Luna brothers and César Macías, who shone at the recent Pan American Road Cycling Championships.

This progress has direct implications for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games. With their current ranking, Mexico would secure three spots to participate in the Olympic road race, guaranteeing a presence and competitiveness in one of the most important events in world sport.

The key date that will officially determine the awarding of these spots will be October 19, 2027, setting a clear objective for the national team in the coming years.

The current landscape reflects the sustained growth of Mexican cycling and the consolidation of talents who, in addition to del Toro, promise to keep the country among the elite of this discipline in upcoming international tournaments.

As for the Colombians, the most prominent in the rankings is Egan Bernal, who climbed to 38th place. Santiago Buitrago follows in 66th place and Harold Tejada in 71st.Belgium leads the UCI rankings with 19,040 points, ahead of Denmark in 2nd (17,780), Slovenia in 3rd (15,479), France in 4th (15,209), and Italy in 5th (14,607).
