In the ascent to San Francisco en Alto, Jhonatan Chaves (Nu Colombia) took revenge and won the fifth stage of the Tour of Guatemala 2024, disputed over a distance of 155 kilometers in mountainous terrain, between the towns of Ocos and Totonicapán.

The young rider from Cundinamarca, who was second the day before, attacked in the final part of the stage to reach the finish line alone. Second came Boyacense Róbinson López (GW Erco Shimano) and third came Guatemalan Mardoqueo Vásquez (Hino-One-La red-Suzuki).

There were no changes in the general classification and David González (Team Medellín-EPM) from Bogotá maintained the lead, ahead of Róbinson López (GW Erco Shimano) from Boyacá by more than a minute. The podium was completed by Guatemalan Mardoqueo Vásquez (Hino-One-La Red-Suzuki).

The day’s breakaway was led by three Colombians: Camilo Ardila (Nu Colombia), Daniel Arroyave (GW Erco Shimano) and Juan Felipe Osorio (Orgullo Paisa), who were accompanied by Panamanian Randish Lorenzo (Panama es Cultura y Valores), Costa Rican Daniel Bonilla (Team Colono Bikestation Kölbi), and Guatemalans Adolfo Vásquez (Hino-One-La Red-Tigo-Suzuki) and Manuel Rodas (Decorabaños – AC Quetzaltenango), but going up to Santa María de Jesús (9.5 km à 7. 3%) six adventurers were caught by the reduced peloton.

In the final uphill stretch, Camilo Ardila (Nu Colombia) fought a spectacular battle against his pursuers, however, fatigue took its toll on the rider from Tolima and he ended up being captured by the favorites. In the closing, Jhonatan Chaves (Nu Colombia) passed all the escapees and went solo in search of victory, which eluded him the previous day.

This Wednesday the sixth stage of the Chapin round will be disputed, an undulating day of 120 kilometers between Totonicapán and María Tecun. The successor of the Guatemalan Gerson Toc, last year’s champion, will be known on Sunday, November 3 in the Ciudad Vieja.
