The formidable Scandinavian road cyclist Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) was crowned champion of the 109th edition of the Giro d’Italia after seizing the pink jersey in the second week and easily navigating the final stage in Rome.
The Dane cruised through the last day to finish atop the podium of the ‘Corsa Rosa’, followed by Austrian Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM Team) in 2nd and Australian Jai Hindley (Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe) in 3rd.
With this victory, Vingegaard became the eighth member of one of cycling’s most exclusive clubs, having achieved the triple crown of Grand Tours, a feat previously accomplished only by Jacques Anquetil, Felice Gimondi, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault, Alberto Contador, Vincenzo Nibali, and Chris Froome.
It’s worth highlighting the performance of the Colombian cyclists, who for the third consecutive year finished in the top 10 of the Giro d’Italia. This time, Egan Bernal (Ineos Grenadiers) from Zipaquirá finished 10th, while Einer Rubio (Movistar Team) from Boyacá finished 23rd.
The final stage of the Giro d’Italia, a 131-kilometer route held in Rome, was won by Italian Jonathan Milan (Lidl – Trek), who outsprinted his compatriot Giovanni Lonardi (Team Polti VisitMalta) and Frenchman Paul Penhoët (Groupama – FDJ United).
