He did it again! Jonas Vingegaard gave his rivals no room to maneuver, winning stage 16 of the Giro d’Italia after covering 113 kilometers between Bellinzona and Carì. The Visma | Lease a Bike team leader now has four stage wins and will be looking to equal the six victories achieved by Slovenian Tadej Pogačar in his debut in 2024.

More than a minute later, Austrian Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM Team) and Australian Jai Hindley (Red Bull – BORA – hansgrohe) crossed the finish line in second and third place, respectively.

As for the Colombian riders, both had a great day. Egan Bernal (Netcompany Ineos) finished 7th, 2:04 behind the winner, after doing excellent work for his teammate, Dutchman Thymen Arensman, who finished 4th. Einer Rubio (Movistar Team) was once again a key figure in the breakaway, finishing 26th, more than 11 minutes back.

Regarding the overall individual classification, Scandinavian Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) consolidated his lead. The provisional podium is completed by Felix Gall (Decathlon CMA CGM Team) and Thymen Arensman (Netcompany INEOS).

The stage for climbers started in Switzerland, in the capital of the canton of Ticino and the district of Bellinzona. In the final section, the peloton tackled the climb to Carì (11.6 km at 8%), after having already tackled four categorized climbs in the initial part of the stage.

Many attackers tried their luck from the start, including Colombian Einer Rubio (Movistar Team), Australian Chris Harper (Pinarello Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team), Italian Giulio Ciccone (Lidl – Trek), and Ecuadorian Jhonatan Narváez (UAE Team Emirates – XRG), among others, but all were caught by the group of favorites.

The Giro d’Italia will continue this Wednesday with stage 17, a 202-kilometer route between Cassano d’Adda and Andalo that includes three category 3 climbs and a slightly uphill finish.
