Santo Domingo – Cuban cyclist Marlies Mejías won the gold medal in the women’s time trial on Saturday, finishing in 40:15 minutes. The 30-kilometer event took place in Mirador Sur Park in the capital city.
The race consisted of three 10-kilometer heats. Mejías completed her first heat in 13:18 minutes, her second in 26:36 minutes, and her third in 40:15.79 minutes.
Mejías, whose husband Ramón Merán is a former member of the Dominican Republic’s national cycling team and resided in the country for several years, secured her ninth gold medal in these regional games.
She took the lead in the competition from the early stages, a performance that allowed her to live up to the expectations that position her as her country’s top cyclist.
Silver and Bronze Medals
The silver medal went to Sara Roel, representing Mexico, who completed the course in 40:33.51. Meanwhile, Teniel Campbell, from Trinidad and Tobago, secured the bronze medal, stopping the clock at 40:59.31.
With this result, Caribbean and Latin American cyclists claimed their first medals in the women’s individual time trial within the overall medal count of the competition.
Dominican cyclist María Mirabal also participated in the event, finishing in 10th place with a time of 44:11 minutes. She covered the first 10 kilometers in 14:37 minutes, the next 10 in 14:47, and the final section in 14:46.
