Nairo Quintana did not have his best performance in the Tour Colombia 2024. The rider, who was returning to World Tour competition after a year’s absence, failed to keep up with his rivals due to health complications.
The boyacense showed several problems to compete at the level of Richard Carapaz, Egan Bernal or Rigoberto Urán. For this reason, his performance ended up being out of what he is used to and finished in 21st place in the race, more than eight minutes behind the winner, Rodrigo Contreras.
After several days of competition on the roads of Boyacá and Cundinamarca, there were a couple of days that cost the Cómbita-born rider. During stage 5 between Cota and Alto del Vino, the boyacense could not hold the pace and the reason was that he was suffering from Covid-19.
Quintana was going to lead the Movistar team in ‘O Gran Camiño’, but he will not be able to be in this Galician race after testing positive for Coronavirus, delaying his return to Europe. Situation that tangles the Colombian’s calendar.
“I want to tell you that the return to Europe is delayed a bit until the coronavirus goes away and I can’t do the Gran Camiño race,” Nairo revealed in a video posted on Movistar’s social networks.
Nairo confirmed that he will be out for a little more than two weeks and that he will soon announce his next race on the calendar. His main goal is to be ready to be the leader of his team in the Giro d’Italia.
