In an uphill finish, Wilson Peña (Team Sistecrédito) won the fourth stage of the Tour of Colombia 2024 disputed between Mariquita and Alto del Sifón in a very demanding route of 116 kilometers.
Peña achieved his first victory in this edition of the Colombian Tour, with a brilliant action in the last meters of the third category climb, after 4 hours, 2 minutes and 4 seconds. The zipaquireño was escorted by Julián Cardona (Team Medellín-EPM) in 2nd place and Rodrigo Contreras (Nu Colombia), who reported in 3rd place, reinforcing his leadership.
The day began with multiple attacks in the early stages of the very hard day. Carlos Alberto Gutiérrez (Team Orígenes Coffee) was one of the protagonists in the first stage. The Santander-born rider was in the lead of the race alone at the beginning.
The sun that was present in the mountain prize of Lebanon saw how Carlos Gutiérrez (Team Orígenes Coffee) crowned the first mountain prize of second category. Salvador Moreno (Inderhuila) came in second and Cristian Rico (Forte Petrolike – Androni Giocattoli) was third.
Later with a strategic move the Forte Petrolike – Androni Giocattoli launched two of its riders: the Ecuadorian Jonathan Caicedo and the boyacense Diego Camargo. On their wheel also slipped into the advanced a great climber Yesid Pira (Alcaldía de Manizales-100 % Huevos), however, the move was quickly countered by the favorites.
After the capture of the trio of great climbers, Cristian Rico (Forte Petrolike – Androni Giocattoli), one of the most active of the day, counterattacked and went solo with 20 kilometers to go, but the group of favorites neutralized him before passing the Alto de Ventanas.
With less than 10,000 meters to go to the Alto del Sifón, Julián Cardona (Team Medellín-EPM) and Diego Camargo (Forte Petrolike – Androni Giocattoli) tried to surprise the group of favorites composed by Rodrigo Contreras (Nu Colombia), Javier Jamaica (Team Medellín-EPM), Wilson Peña (Team Sistecrédito) and Robinson López (GW Erco Shimano), but they were unsuccessful.
Four riders made it to the final, where Wilson Peña (Team Sistecredito) ended up being the strongest, beating Julián Cardona (Team Medellín-EPM).
The Colombian round will continue this Wednesday with the dispute of the fifth stage, a long fraction of 195.6 kilometers with departure in Manizales and arrival in the municipality of Buga, in the department of Valle del Cauca.
