The National Independence Cycling Tour will begin this Monday and for the first time since 2008 the president of the Dominican Republic will give the starting signal for the tour that concludes next Sunday. Luis Abinader Corona will do it from the National Palace.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Sports, Francisco Camacho in a meeting with the press held this Friday in the Juan Ulises García Saleta Room, of the Dominican Olympic Committee.

It was Leonel Fernández when he was president of the Republic who gave the banner that opened the Independence tour in 2008.

On that occasion, the Vuelta was dedicated to Wendy Cruz for the first medal of Dominican cycling that she won at the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Fernández raised the flag on the steps of the Presidential Palace, where President Abinader is scheduled to do so on Monday at 10:00 in the morning.

The Vuelta will be carried out from next Monday with a route of just over a thousand kilometers.

COVID-19 tests will be carried out on all those involved in the tour, both athletes and members of support for the Vuelta.

The president of the Dominican Cycling Federation, Jorge Blas Díaz said that the presence of President Abinader guarantees a level tour.

Along with Camacho, the mayor of the National District, Carolina Mejía, the president of the COD, Antonio Acosta as well as members of the executive committee of Fedoci and the Olympic body attended the press conference.

The champion of the 2020 Vuelta is the Dominican Ismael Sánchez, a native of La Vega.
