The Vuelta a Guatemala returned to the roads of that country this Sunday, October 23, after a year of absence due to the covid-19 pandemic, and in the first of the ten stages, the Colombian Robinson Chalamud dressed as leader, by winning in alone the 162 kilometers of the journey.

This 61st edition began with a segment marked by the descent, since it began over 1,500 meters above sea level and ended at 162. This return of the event was great, since the platoon of cyclists participated largest in the history of the Vuelta.

This first stage, which had its controlled starting point in the Plaza de la Constitución in the Guatemala City area at approximately 9:00 a.m., officially began around 9:30 a.m. when the 136 registered cyclists passed through the kilometer 0 located on the Erick Barrondo Bridge on the Carretera al Atlántico.

Chalamud, from the Ecuadorian team Team Banco Guayaquil, finished the stage in three hours, 43 minutes and 31 seconds, three seconds ahead of his closest pursuer, Panamanian Franklin Archibold, from the Panama Culture and Values ​​team. The third place in the stage was the Guatemalan Dorian Monterroso, from the Elite Decorabaños Quetzaltenango team, four seconds behind the leader.

Thanks to its good performance this Sunday, Chalapud will take the “sweater” of leader of the competition, which has 20 registered teams, 14 national and 6 international.

This 61st edition of the Cycling Tour of Guatemala has the participation of 136 athletes from local teams and from Mexico, Ecuador, Panama and Colombia.
