In a fast-paced finish, Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin – Deceuninck) beat his rivals to win the 16th stage of the Tour de France 2024, on a 188.6-kilometer route between Gruissan and Nîmes, on flat terrain. In the closing stages, in one of the traffic circles, the Eritrean Biniam Girmay went down, fortunately without serious consequences.

The Belgian rider, helped by his teammate Mathieu Van der Poel, won his third victory in the French round, being the fastest in the bunch ahead of German Phil Bauhaus (Bahrain – Victorious) and Norwegian Alexander Kristoff (Uno-X Mobility), who finished 2nd and 3rd, respectively. The best Colombian was Fernando Gaviria (Movistar Team) in 14th place with the same time as the winner.

As for the general classification there were no changes, the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) continues to lead the race, escorted by the Danish Jonas Vingegaard (Team Visma | Lease a Bike) and the Belgian Remco Evenepoel (Soudal – Quick Step).

The breakaway of the day was led by the French rider Thomas Gachignard (TotalEnergies). In the end, the lone adventurer could not withstand the onslaught of the peloton and was caught. In the finish, Belgian Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin – Deceuninck) was the fastest to take the victory, the third for him and his team in this edition of the Grand Bouclé, tying the number of victories of Girmay.

The French round will continue on Wednesday with stage 17, a 177.8-kilometer medium-mountain stage between Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux and Superdévoluy, which includes three climbs, finishing on a third-category climb.
