In a thrilling finish, Mathieu van der Poel took the victory in stage nine of the 2016 Tour de France. The Alpecin-Premier Tech rider proved the strongest in the breakaway after covering 154.6 kilometers between Malemort and Ussel.

The Dutch all-rounder, who secured the first victory for his team in the Tour de France, outsprinted his breakaway companions, Norwegian Tobias Halland Johannessen (Uno-X Mobility) and Briton Tom Pidcock (Pinarello Q36.5 Pro Cycling Team). The best Colombian of the day was Einer Rubio (Movistar Team) from Boyacá, finishing 29th, six seconds behind the winner.

As for the general classification, Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) retained first place without incident, Mexican Isaac del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) held onto third, while Egan Bernal (Network Ineos) from Zipaquirá remained the highest-placed Colombian rider, but now in 10th position.

The Tour de France, which will have its first rest day this Monday, continues on Tuesday with a challenging 166.6-kilometer stage between Aurillac and Le Lioran, featuring eight categorized climbs.
