MADRID. The Danish Jakob Fuglsang (Astana) won on Monday the 16th stage of the Tour of Spain between Pravia and the top of La Cubilla, after which the Slovenian Primoz Roglic (Jumbo-Visma) takes hold as leader of the race.

Fuglsang entered alone at the top of the hard top of La Cubilla in a stage in which Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) retained the second place of the general, but lost time with respect to the leader and with the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar (UAE) and the Colombian Miguel Ángel ‘Supermán’ López (Astana) in the fight for the podium.

The Colombian jumped on the long climb to La Cubilla surprising a hitherto solid Roglic, who managed, however, to recover to reach ‘Superman’ López and Pogacar, hooked on the South American wheel.

He could not keep up Alejandro Valverde, who ended up losing a score of seconds compared to his most immediate pursuers in the general.

The favorites fought their own war in the platoon behind the escape of the day, of which Fuglsang was a part.

The Danish abandoned his escape teammates 7 km from the finish line with a start that could only be followed by the Italian Gianluca Brambilla (Trek-Segafredo), who would also end up giving up.

Fuglsang crossed the finish line first followed by British Tao Geoghegan Hart (Ineos) at 22 seconds and Spaniard Luis León Sánchez (Astana) at 40 seconds. (EFE)
